Experiencing trauma as a result of crime can feel isolating and overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Through CVAP, you can access counselling services to help you heal and regain a sense of safety and stability.

what is CVAP?

The Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) is a provincial initiative in British Columbia that provides financial assistance to victims of crime, their family members, and witnesses. CVAP covers counselling services to help you process your experience, rebuild your emotional well-being, and move forward in your life. 

Who is CVAP Counselling For?

You may qualify for CVAP-funded counselling if you are:

  • A victim of a violent crime in British Columbia.

  • An immediate family member of a victim.

  • A witness who has experienced emotional or psychological harm.

 

Eligibility is not dependent on charges or convictions.

How Does CVAP Counselling Work?

  • Step 1: Apply to CVAP

If you haven’t applied yet, visit the CVAP website for the application form. Need help? Contact us, and we’ll guide you through the process.

  • Step 2: Get Connected
    Once approved, connect with a CVAP-approved counsellor. We’d be honored to support you on your journey to healing.

  • Step 3: Start Your Sessions
    Together, we’ll create a counselling plan tailored to your needs and work toward your goals at a pace that feels right for you.

FAQs about CVAP Counselling

  • 1. Do I have to pay for counselling upfront?
    No. CVAP covers the cost of approved sessions, so you don’t need to worry about financial barriers.

  • 2. How long does CVAP counselling last?
    The number of sessions depends on your CVAP approval. We’ll help you make the most of your coverage. Commonly CVAP covers 12-48 counselling session plus additional sessions for court support.

  • 3. What if I don’t qualify for CVAP?
    We also offer affordable private counselling options to ensure you get the support you need.

Therapeutic approaches:

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART): rapid approach to healing trauma, utilizing techniques such as eye movements to process distressing memories, trauma and promote emotional resilience.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Focuses on accepting what is beyond one's control while committing to actions that align with personal values, fostering psychological flexibility and resilience.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): therapy views the mind as a complex system of various "parts," each with its own unique perspectives and purposes, aiming to promote harmony and healing by understanding and integrating these internal dynamics.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Addresses negative thought patterns and behaviors, teaching couples to reframe perspectives and develop healthier relationship habits.

  • Narrative Therapy: Focuses on understanding and rewriting the stories couples tell about their relationship, empowering them to create a narrative that aligns with their values and goals.

  • Gottman Method: Emphasizes building friendship, managing conflict, and creating shared meaning in relationships.
